Steamboat Powdercats, in cooperation with our friends at SASS Global Travel (SGT) are proud to offer custom/hosted, backcountry ski and splitboarding adventures to Cerro Catedral in Bariloche, Argentina.

This tour is typically organized in early summer as we like to head to Argentina late August into early September. Once the full itinerary and rates get configured we will post them on this page. In 2016, Eric and Kent from SPC partnered with the crew from SGT and we hosted SPC guests and friends into the backcountry of one of South America’s most cherished powder stashes.

Once we fine-tune rates and exact itinerary we will be posting here. If you have an interest and wish to be on our email list for this, send us your contact info here (info@steamboatpowdercats.com).

– FOR THE SUMMER OF 2023, SPC WILL NOT BE HEADING TO ARGENTINA, SORRY –

This location at Cerro Catedral offers some of the best backcountry skiing and splitboarding in South America (see images of terrain on this page). We utilize an SGT guide for their intimate knowledge of the local terrain and tailor each days skiing and riding to the desires of our group. Due to the lift accessed, hike-to nature of this off-piste terrain, guests can expect to have hikes of roughly 15-45 minutes to access the zones. With that said, there is plenty of in-bounds terrain that we take advantage of, especially if it’s snowing or weather conditions do not permit us to get into the backcountry.

Along with the lift accessed backcounty at Cerro Catedral, we will also schedule at least 1 day of skiing and riding at an alternative destination. In 2016 we went to Baguales Mountain Reserve. This Patagonian snowcat operation is located 1 1/2 hour from the base of Catedral and offers big mountain type terrain, a luxurious lodge and views that will blow your mind.

“What an amazing adventure! It totally exceeded my expectations, and my expectations were very high! Every aspect of the trip was managed to perfection. You guys and Mauri, from SGT, were terrific guides, the cat skiing at Baguales was spectacular, the selection of restaurants was excellent and I am not really sure how you arranged the dump of fresh POW but it sure was appreciated! You can count me in for the trip next summer.”

– Bob B, from 2016 trip.

“A life changing experience!! The Patagonia region was way beyond what I had imagined. Saw my first condor which by the way predicts snow for real! It was like stepping into a Warren Miller movie. I’ve been lucky enough to have skied backcountry trips all over but this trip truly pushed my limits and brought me to a whole new level. Big shout out to our guides Eric, Kent and Mauri for keeping us all safe!!!”

– John Dee

LEVEL III

Our Level III guests actively seek out the most advanced terrain and deepest powder at any ski area and have no problem with blue, black or double-black runs. Many of our guests in this level have been on other heli or snowcat operations in the past and/or are active backcountry enthusiasts.

LEVEL III

We ask that all guests who participate on this tour be solid Level III type skiers and snowboarders, based on our ratings at SPC.

For those guests with limited skinning and/or avalanche experience, we will provide you with lessons on how to utilize your gear and manage your risk. We ask for those coming who are splitboarding to be already proficient with your gear.

Skiing/riding aside, the Bariloche area offers amazing sightseeing and cultural opportunities. The beautiful city of San Carlos de Bariloche situated along the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi, is a charming mix of Patagonian and European architecture, food and cultural offerings, including amazing wines, meats, chocolate and brewerys. We typically set aside some time for trips into town, whether it be a full day excursion along the lake, or a microbrew tour in the evening after skiing.
